Our next fundraising event:Colne-Valley-Orchestra-Concert-2016

The beautiful, historic Church of St Peter and St Paul has stood in the West Mersea village centre for many centuries and is a well loved landmark for the local community and visitors. The cost in both time and money to preserve, maintain and develop this ancient Grade1 Listed Building is high and it is no longer possible for the congregation alone to fund.

64181394‘The Friends of West Mersea Parish Church’ is established as a group of interested people from the wider community who wish to support and maintain this wonderful Mersea ancient building, as this requires a long term sustainable commitment. In this way we will ensure that this generation hands the Church on in good order to the next, just as previous custodians have done. ‘Friends’ organisations have been extremely successful both locally and nationally in achieving these objectives.

Committee Members Jan Lawler and Richard Taylor present a cheque for £4809.65 to Rector Sam Norton and Church Treasurer, Roland Gardener, covering the costs for the building restorative work to the South Aisle window – one of our first sponsored projects.

As a result of organising a number of successful concerts and other community events we have been able to raise over £50,000 since our inception in 2011. This has enabled us to fund nearly £20,000 of maintenance and improvement works for the Church with a further £15,000 committed to essential health and safety works currently under way in the Church tower (November 2015).

The various concerts and events held in the Church building have also helped to reinvigorate the Church as the centre of community activity and create a greater awareness among local people of the heritage of this important monument.
